Colcemid is a mitotic inhibitor that disrupts microtubule polymerization by binding to tubulin, effectively arresting cells in metaphase. It is commonly used in cytogenetic studies to prepare chromosomes for karyotyping, as metaphase cells display condensed, easily visualized chromosomes.
